The Government has launched a five-year national campaign aimed at creating a tobacco-free society, marking a major step in efforts to reduce tobacco use across the Maldives.

The initiative was announced at a press conference held at the President’s Office to commemorate World No Tobacco Day.

Minister of Health, Family and Welfare Geela Ali said the government has already introduced key measures, including a generational tobacco ban and a ban on electronic cigarettes. She stressed that reducing tobacco use requires long-term commitment and active participation from both individuals and communities.

The campaign will focus on awareness programmes, educational and youth initiatives, civil society engagement, incentives, and stronger law enforcement.

Cabinet ministers attending the event highlighted the importance of collective responsibility in achieving the campaign’s goals. The initiative reflects President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s World No Tobacco Day message, which called for united action to protect future generations and build a healthier, tobacco-free Maldives.

The press conference was also attended by Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology Ali Ihusaan, Minister of Education, Higher Education and Skills Development Dr Ismail Shafeeu, and Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Fitness Abdulla Rafiu.
