The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has stated that two more individuals have contracted measles, a disease that has been declared eradicated from the Maldives.
HPA said today that while contact tracing was being conducted in connection with those infected last week, a total of nine people have now contracted the disease so far, including the two newly detected cases. Out of these, six cases were detected within this month alone, HPA noted.
Measles is a dangerous, highly contagious disease that spreads rapidly from person to person. Symptoms of the disease include high fever, the appearance of red rashes on the skin, as well as coughing, a runny nose, and red eyes.
The disease can lead to serious complications such as contracting pneumonia and affecting eyesight, presenting a potential threat to life. Completing two doses of the vaccine is crucial to protecting against this disease.
