The General Purpose Committee of the Parliament has decided to give Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim 10 minutes to respond to a motion seeking his removal from office.

The decision was made during a committee meeting held on Wednesday to discuss the no-confidence motion submitted by Nazim’s own party, the People's National Congress (PNC).

The proposal to allow Nazim 10 minutes to respond was presented by Holhudhoo MP Abdul Sattar Mohamed and supported by Dhuvaafaru MP Mohamed Ali. The committee also agreed to allocate one hour for debate, with each MP given three minutes to speak.

The motion was passed unanimously by the seven members present, while Maavashu MP Ahmed Shakir did not vote. Shakir argued that Nazim should be given more time to defend himself, noting that similar cases in previous parliaments allowed broader opportunities for accountability.

Committee Chair Mohamed Shahid said the dismissal process would be conducted transparently and according to parliamentary regulations.

The PNC submitted the no-confidence motion last week, accusing Nazim of misusing his influence, failing to protect the rights of MPs, and obstructing parliamentary duties.
