The National Council of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has unanimously approved a resolution to implement a joint agreement signed by former Presidents Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Mohamed Nasheed and Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
The motion was submitted by former MDP chairperson Fayyaz Ismail and seconded by former Hoarafushi MP Ahmed Saleem.
The resolution accuses President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s administration of undermining constitutional rights, weakening the independence of Parliament, the judiciary and state institutions, and dismantling decentralisation and good governance.
It also highlights economic difficulties faced by the public, including rising prices and a declining standard of living, as well as concerns over press freedom and the arrests and prosecution of journalists.
The MDP said it would cooperate in implementing the actions outlined in the joint statement issued by the three former presidents on 15 May 2026, aimed at restoring democratic principles and addressing what they described as a loss of public confidence in the government.
The resolution also calls for the immediate release of two detained journalists and an end to legal proceedings against media workers.
