Photos of the man who was allegedly tortured by officers of Maldives Police Service have hit social media, where many are calling for the four officers to be detained immediately.

Photos show several bruises on the man's back, wrists and arms.

While Commissioner of Police confirmed the case of manhandling by four officers during a house search, they have been suspended and an investigation by HRCM has begun into the case.

While the video of police manhandling the suspect has gone viral on social media, several people have been voicing their opinions on the matter. Some have called on the officers to be dismissed while some have been calling out for punishment.

Some of these also include people who have held high level positions in the government as well.

"The officers involved need to be treated as accused. Suspension is not sufficient. Initiate a Criminal investigation immediately," former Deputy Prosecutor General, Hussain Shameem said on Twitter regarding the matter.

Commissioner of Police, Mohamed Hameedh had previously revealed that the officers would be suspended as well.

HRCM confirmed that a case of alleged torture had been lodged with them and that their Rapid Response Team was investigating the case.

"The Rapid Response Team (RRT) of HRCM is investigating a case of alleged torture which had been lodged at the Commission on 05.07.2019," HRCM said in their tweet.

Police revealed that the operation was carried by the Drug Enforcement Department on intel which claimed that a drug trafficking operation was going on at the premises.
