MDP member Zaeema Mohamed has been elected as the Vice President of the ADh. Mahibadhoo Council in the eighth round of voting held among the new council members to elect a deputy.
The councilors elected for the new term took their oaths on Sunday. By law, a deputy must be elected during the first meeting held following the members' election. The council's work can only commence once a Vice President is elected.
However, the votes taken yesterday resulted in ties, bringing the council's work to a standstill.
Three individuals contested for the position of Vice President of the Mahibadhoo Council. They are MDP member Zaeema Mohamed, PNC member Mohamed Maumoon, and independent member Bunyaameen Hassan.
In the first round of voting to elect the Vice President, Zaeema Mohamed received two votes, Mohamed Maumoon also received two votes, and Bunyaameen Hassan received one vote. Due to the tie, six additional rounds of voting were conducted, which also resulted in ties.
In those rounds, Zaeema and Maumoon each received two votes, but a result could not be reached due to one invalid vote.
Finally, in the vote taken last night, a Vice President was successfully elected to the island council.
In the vote taken last night, Zaeema received three votes, while Maumoon received two votes.
