IGMH has begun conducting surgeries using modern laser technology.
In a statement released yesterday, IGMH stated that based on statistics from 2023 to last year, the majority of patients who consulted at the surgical OPDs were those seeking treatment for conditions that require laser surgery.
However, the conventional surgeries previously performed for these conditions required patients to be admitted to the hospital for extended periods to heal and recover, and the overall recovery process took a long time. Nevertheless, IGMH noted that with laser surgery, there will be significant relief from these issues.
The CEO of Malé City Group of Hospitals, Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem, stated that as part of the government's efforts to elevate the Maldives' healthcare system to the next level, surgeries using modern laser technology commenced yesterday at Dharumavantha Hospital and IGMH.
He detailed that facilities have been established at Dharumavantha Hospital and IGMH to perform four types of surgeries using laser technology, which are conducted by the General Surgery team of the Department of Surgery. These include:
- Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT), a surgery for swollen and enlarged leg veins (varicose veins)
- Laser Hemorrhoidoplasty, a laser surgery for hemorrhoids (piles)
- Fistula-Tract Laser Closure (FiLaC), a surgery for anal fistulas
- Sinus Laser Closure (SiLaC), a laser surgery for pilonidal sinus
Abdul Razzaq stated that the greatest comfort for patients with this service is that surgeries can be performed without major incisions, reducing pain and enabling a very quick recovery. He also noted that the required hospital admission duration will be shortened, and the risk of infection will be comparatively lower.
