The work of the ADh. Mahibadhoo Council has come to a halt after failing to elect a Vice President, despite holding six rounds of voting among the council members.
The councilors elected for the new term took their oaths yesterday. By law, a deputy must be elected during the first meeting held following the members' election. The council's work can only commence once a Vice President is elected.
The Mahibadhoo Council stated that three individuals are contesting for the position of Vice President. They are MDP member Zaeema Mohamed, PNC member Mohamed Maumoon, and independent member Bunyaameen Hassan.
In the first round of voting to elect the Vice President, Zaeema Mohamed received two votes, Mohamed Maumoon also received two votes, and Bunyaameen Hassan received one vote. Due to the tie, five additional rounds of voting were conducted, which also resulted in ties.
In those rounds, Zaeema and Maumoon each received two votes, but a result could not be reached due to one invalid vote.
With the failure to elect a Vice President and the council's work at a standstill, a decision has been made to hold another vote to elect a deputy at 1:00 PM today.
