President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the productive discussions held with the Sri Lankan President and Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya across various sectors have provided him with significant encouragement and assurance. The President shared these remarks in a post on X as he departed Sri Lanka, concluding the state visit that began on the 3rd of this month.
The visit was made at the official invitation of Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, with the President accompanied by a high-level delegation of senior ministers and government officials. Upon concluding the trip, President Muizzu expressed his profound gratitude to the government and people of Sri Lanka for the warm hospitality extended to him, First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, and the Maldivian delegation.
"Leaving Sri Lanka after a successful state visit with a renewed commitment to further strengthen the close and long-standing relations between the Maldives and Sri Lanka," the President stated. This marked President Muizzu's first state visit to Sri Lanka since assuming office in 2023.Reflecting on his meetings with top officials, President Muizzu noted that the productive dialogues with the President and Prime Minister gave him great confidence in the future of the partnership. He expressed hope for the two nations to work together to transform their commitments into meaningful results for the benefit and prosperity of both peoples.
During the visit, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya paid a courtesy call on President Muizzu, where they engaged in extensive discussions regarding cooperation in tourism, healthcare, education, vocational training, and socio-economic development. Both leaders acknowledged the significant roles that Sri Lankan citizens play in the development of the Maldives and that Maldivians play in the development of Sri Lanka.
A total of seven key agreements were signed during the visit, covering sectors such as tourism, education, higher education, health, sports, youth development, and defense. Notable among these were agreements between General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University and the Maldives National Defence Force, as well as a collaboration between the University of Colombo and the Maldivian health sector.
President Muizzu emphasized that the purpose of the visit was not merely to refresh existing ties but to launch a forward-looking partnership. Discussions included expanding trade and investment, such as the potential opening of a Bank of Maldives branch in Sri Lanka. The President also highlighted the importance of introducing Maldivian fish products to the Sri Lankan market and narrowing the trade gap to establish a balanced and mutually beneficial economic relationship.
Formal diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Sri Lanka were established on July 26, 1965, with this year marking the 61st anniversary of their ties. Sri Lanka remains a vital partner in the Maldives' education and health sectors and is home to a large Maldivian community. As a significant gesture of strengthening ties following this visit, the Sri Lankan government has allocated land in Colombo for the construction of a Maldivian High Commission, while the Maldivian government has reciprocated by providing land in Malé for the Sri Lankan High Commission.
