The Ministry of Housing, Land, and Urban Development has decided to close Sultan Park to the public during specific hours each day, effective today, to facilitate ongoing renovation work. According to an announcement made by the Ministry, the park will close at 6:00 PM daily to allow additional project tasks to be completed more efficiently and at a faster pace.
Sultan Park had previously undergone extensive renovations and was reopened in March of this year to coincide with Eid al-Fitr after falling into a state of disrepair. However, less than two months after its reopening, the authorities have opted for these partial closures to finalize maintenance. This follows previous closures, including a three-month period starting in August last year and restricted access to certain areas of the park since June 2024.
The park was originally developed to its current standard during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s tenure as Housing Minister under the Yameen administration. While it initially featured a snow park, that section was later closed. President Muizzu has stated that the current redevelopment aims to reflect Maldivian identity and history, featuring designs suitable for all ages, including elevated walkways between trees and various recreational facilities. The Housing Ministry expressed its apologies to the public for any inconvenience caused by these temporary repair schedules.
