This year’s National Day will be officially celebrated in Utheemu, Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage Heena Waleed announced during a press conference at the President’s Office.

The minister said preparations are underway, alongside several development and heritage projects aimed at preserving historical sites and promoting national identity. These include efforts to protect the heritage of Ghaazee Bandarain across Utheemu, Thakandhoo, and Baarah.

Key projects in Utheemu include the development of a Story Forest Park near Kandhuvalu Mosque, upgrades to the mosque and its surrounding structures, improvements to Utheemu Palace with a new lighting system, and the construction of a gateway honoring Boduthakurufaanu. A senior citizens’ park at the harbor is also planned.

Additional initiatives include reconstruction of the ancient coralstone works and Veu Cemetery area, and plans for a memorial center for Alithakurufaanu in Thakandhoo. In Baarah, work will begin this month to develop the Kalhuohfummi construction area into a museum, alongside ongoing development of Kamama Magu.

Projects in other areas include heritage site developments in Hangnaameedhoo and Kelaa, as well as plans to transform Usgekolhu in Sultan Park, Male’, into an interactive museum. Construction for this project was recently handed over to FDC.

Minister Heena expressed hope that many of these projects will be completed in time for National Day celebrations.
