The government has clarified that the police investigation into the documentary “Aisha,” aired by the newspaper Count, was not conducted at the behest of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu or the administration.

Chief Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef stated that authorities began looking into the matter independently, even before the president publicly rejected the documentary’s claims. He added that two separate investigations are currently underway.

Police are examining whether the newspaper attempted to violate laws related to freedom of expression, while the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission (MMRC) is also investigating the case, including reported transactions linked to the documentary.

In connection with the probe, the passports of a woman, the newspaper’s CEO Hussain Fiyaz Moosa, and Editor Hassan Mohamed have been withheld. Police have also raided the newspaper’s office and seized several items.

The investigation has drawn attention to ongoing concerns about media regulation and press freedom.
