Parliament has approved a new cabinet formed by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu following a major government reshuffle that reduced the number of ministries.
A report from the Government Oversight Committee recommending approval of 14 ministers was passed, with the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) using its supermajority to back all nominees. The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) supported some candidates but withheld backing for several key նախարարial posts.
The cabinet overhaul follows the sudden resignation of 10 ministers, with the President’s Office stating the changes were aimed at better aligning the government with public expectations. Ministries were merged as part of the restructuring, reducing the cabinet from 20 members to 15, including 14 ministers and the attorney general.
Key appointments include Moosa Zameer as Finance Minister, Ali Ihusan overseeing Homeland Security, Labor and Technology, and Iruthisham Adam as Foreign Minister. Other portfolios span economic development, housing, climate, education, and defense.
The reshuffle also coincided with changes in state-owned enterprises, with several managing directors stepping down or being replaced.
