Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, has stated that any changes to taxi fares will only be implemented after thorough consultations across all relevant levels.
Due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East causing global oil prices to surge, fuel costs in the Maldives have fluctuated, leading taxi drivers to request an adjustment to current fare rates.
During a press conference at the President's Office today, Minister Saeed confirmed that he had received formal requests from drivers.
"Letters requesting changes to taxi fares were already present when I took over. I have stated that we will review these requests, discuss the matter at the Cabinet level, and further engage with all stakeholders, including the drivers and taxi centers," the Minister said.Minister Saeed explained that one of the primary reasons for integrating the functions of the Economic Ministry and the Transport Ministry was to identify and resolve issues within the taxi service and to strengthen its management.
The Minister further noted that with the recent changes to the government mandate and the consolidation of these ministries, efforts are underway to ensure that transport-related services are delivered more efficiently. This includes ongoing discussions to streamline the vehicle registration process.
