The Maldives Police Service has destroyed more than 185 kilograms of narcotics seized during various investigations.
According to a police statement yesterday, the disposal took place this past Monday on the island of Dhoonidhoo. The destroyed substances included:
- 4,690 rubber packets of drugs
- 2,768 cellophane pieces
- 335 film canisters
- 462 drug "bullets"
- 3,437 prohibited medicinal pills
- 1,809 other drug-related items
The destruction process was carried out under the supervision of a specially formed committee, following established regulations for the disposal of seized narcotics and related evidence.
In an effort to ensure transparency, the event was witnessed by members of the press and private citizens who had registered to participate in the public observation of the activity.
The police highlighted that under the most recent amendments to their protocols, only the legally required amount of narcotics necessary for investigation and court proceedings is retained. All remaining quantities are now destroyed as quickly as possible to prevent accumulation and ensure safety.
