President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that 10,954 individuals have received mental health treatment through the national health insurance scheme, Aasandha, within this year alone.
During a press conference held at the President's Office today, the President stated that because the field of mental health is an area where both past governments and society have not provided adequate support, resolving these issues is a high priority for this administration.
The President noted that since January 1st of this year, arrangements have been made to provide mental health treatment through Aasandha, which has provided significant financial relief to many people.
"According to the information I have received, from January 1st to April 24th, 10,954 patients or individuals have been provided coverage for psychiatric consultations and psychological therapy within the mental health sector," the President said.
The President stated that building a mental health hospital was one of his pledges. He explained that although efforts were initially made to secure foreign loan assistance for the project, the government has now decided to build the hospital using the state budget due to the lengthy procedures involved in external funding.
Additionally, the President mentioned that it has now been decided to construct a mental health hospital in the Greater Malé area. However, he clarified that no changes have been made to the previous plan to also establish a mental health hospital in Gan.
