A no-confidence motion has been submitted against Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) interim chairperson Abdul Gafoor Moosa.

The motion was filed in parliament by a faction aligned with former President Mohamed Nasheed. A member of the group said the petition carries the signatures of 55 members.

The move follows internal disputes within the party, after Nasheed was not given the opportunity to speak at a ceremony celebrating the party’s victory in Saturday’s local council elections.

Tensions escalated further with the dismissal of key figures from Nasheed’s faction, including deputy chairperson Ibrahim Waheed and the faction’s legal head.

The MDP remains divided, with its two main factions led by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Mohamed Nasheed.
