President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has urged stronger reliance on science and evidence-based decision-making in health policies, warning that the rapid spread of misinformation, fuelled by social media and artificial intelligence, poses growing risks to public health.

In his World Health Day message, he reaffirmed the Maldives’ longstanding commitment to science-driven health strategies. He outlined ongoing efforts to strengthen the nation’s healthcare system, including expanding digital health services, improving disease surveillance, integrating health data systems, and promoting early detection and healthier lifestyles.

The President also highlighted close collaboration with the World Health Organization and other global partners to ensure access to the latest medical knowledge and practices. He called for increased investment in research and stronger international cooperation to ensure health interventions are grounded in solid evidence.

Emphasising the importance of global unity, he encouraged countries to work together under science-led approaches, including within the One Health framework.

First Lady Sajidha Mohamed echoed these views, stressing the connection between health and environmental challenges such as climate change, antimicrobial resistance, and emerging diseases. She also called for greater cross-border collaboration and healthier living to support long-term wellbeing.

World Health Day, marked annually on April 7, commemorates the founding of the World Health Organization in 1948.
