The President of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and former Foreign Minister, Abdulla Shahid, has stated that internal differences must be set aside to work alongside the people to change the current government.

Speaking at the "Heyvalla Thahyaaru" rally held tonight at the Artificial Beach to celebrate the MDP's victories in the Local Council elections, the Women’s Development Committee elections, and the public referendum, Shahid remarked that these successes were achieved through the hard work of the party's courageous members. He emphasized that tonight’s celebration belongs to those members and called for unity to complete the work that began as a collective effort.

Shahid asserted that the primary mission of the MDP must be to defeat the current administration and steer the Maldives back onto the right path.

"By setting aside our internal disagreements, we must work to bring a change to this government and seek a better future for the Maldives. Therefore, join us. Unite for this cause. Let us move forward together. The hopes of the Maldivian people in the 'scales' (the MDP symbol) are immense. The scales represent equality, justice, progress, development, and the administration of this state through a decentralized system. Let us move forward with all the citizens who share this hope. We cannot afford to step back; the people want us to move forward," Shahid declared.

Shahid highlighted that tonight's gathering celebrates the fact that the citizens have very clearly said "no" to this government, noting that 70 percent of the voters rejected the administration's proposal.

He also extended a call to the members of the ruling PNC in the People’s Majlis to stand with the people. He stated that members of parliament must work alongside the citizens, particularly in defense of the Constitution.

"We absolutely cannot afford to remain idle or retreat. Our entire effort must be focused on setting this state right and standing up in protection of the Constitution. The Maldivian people have demonstrated their will in this regard," Shahid remarked.

Shahid concluded by reiterating that there should be no retreat, and the party must continue to advance together with the people.
