The Interim Chairperson of the MDP, Abdul Ghafoor Moosa (Gapo), has stated that the internal harmony was disrupted while efforts were still underway to grant former President Mohamed Nasheed an opportunity to speak at the victory rally held last night to celebrate the party's success in last Saturday’s three elections.

Former President Nasheed did not attend the "Heyvalla Thahyaaru" rally held at the Artificial Beach last night, expressing his dissatisfaction after reportedly not receiving a speaking slot to mark the party's triumphs in the Local Council elections, the Women’s Development Committee elections, and the public referendum.

According to some MDP activists, the initial agenda included a speech by Nasheed; however, the schedule was later revised to feature a mayor instead. Amidst the brewing tension, Nasheed posted on his X account, stating, "This joyous night has become very heartbreaking."

In addition to Nasheed, the former Chairperson of the MDP, Fayyaz Ismail, and several supporters of Nasheed boycotted last night’s event. Furthermore, some factions on social media have begun calling for Gapo’s resignation.

In a post on X following the rally, Gapo clarified that the official agenda was originally set to feature himself, MDP President Abdulla Shahid, city mayors, WDC presidents, the campaign manager, and the chair of the referendum committee.

"I regret the spread of rumors that disrupted the peace while I was working to arrange speaking opportunities requested by former Chair Faya [Fayyaz Ismail] and President Nasheed for tonight’s session," Gapo stated.

He also expressed his hope that all members would cooperate to maintain the unity and strength of the MDP.
