Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that the government's next course of action should be to align its policies with the will of the people.
According to the provisional results of today's Local Council elections and the public referendum, the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has secured victories in both. The provisional data shows that the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) only managed to take the lead in the Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections.
In a post on X tonight, Solih remarked that the citizens have said "no" to the government's policies. He noted that the election results demonstrate the public's desire for the government to change its current direction.
"What the government must do without delay is listen to the people and bring changes to policies as they desire," Solih stated.
He also expressed his gratitude to all MDP members and well-wishers who worked towards winning the elections. Furthermore, he extended his congratulations to all the successful candidates.
Provisional results of the council elections indicate that the MDP has won super-majorities in the councils of Addu City, Fuvahmulah City, Thinadhoo City, and Malé City.
In the WDC elections, provisional data shows that the PNC has secured a win.
Regarding the public referendum votes counted so far, 70 percent of voters have rejected the proposal to hold two elections on the same day, while 30 percent voted in favor of the change.
