Jumhooree Party leader and Maamigili MP Qasim Ibrahim has alleged that opposition to holding Presidential and Parliamentary elections on the same day is driven by concerns over reduced allowances for former presidents.
Speaking in an interview with VTV, Qasim said former leaders are prioritising personal financial interests over national needs. He criticised their stance, arguing that they are unwilling to reduce expenses despite the country’s economic challenges.
Former Presidents Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Mohamed Nasheed, and Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom have expressed opposition to conducting the two elections simultaneously.
Qasim also emphasised the role of business leaders in supporting the economy, stating that those who invest and create jobs contribute more significantly to the country than political figures.
Several prominent businessmen have backed the proposal to hold the elections together, including Maldives Development Alliance leader Ahmed Siyam Mohamed and businessman Champa Mohamed Moosa.
