President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that a public debate needs to be initiated regarding the requirement for educated and experienced individuals to fill elected offices.
Speaking at a press conference held at the President's Office today, the President emphasized his personal commitment to building an educated generation and his desire to see academic qualifications prioritized for leadership roles.
"I truly wish for educated individuals to step forward for every field of work—be it the Parliament, local councils, or the presidency. I firmly believe that anyone contesting for an elected position should be highly capable in terms of education and experience. This is a topic I want to see debated within the public sphere: establishing minimum educational standards for those seeking election to the Majlis or any other representative office," the President remarked.
The President further noted that one of his specific objectives is to elevate and strengthen the eligibility criteria for presidential candidates. He expressed his readiness to facilitate and engage in discussions on this matter.
"The core concept of my argument is giving priority to educated people. To achieve this target, we must ensure that the most capable individuals, in terms of education and experience, are selected and given the opportunity. I fully support such a system and stand ready to provide any necessary facilitation through the government," the President said.
He reiterated his openness to discussing and debating these issues with the public. Additionally, the President suggested that the debate should encompass the possibility of allocating specific percentages of such positions to youth, women, and persons with disabilities.
