Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, Thoriq Ibrahim, has stated that the safe management of waste in cities and islands is being carried out through significant government subsidies.
Speaking at a press conference held at the President's Office today, Minister Thoriq noted that during the trips made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to various islands over the past two years, the lack of adequate and safe waste management systems emerged as one of the most frequent complaints from residents.
He highlighted that the President has prioritized this issue, monitoring the situation closely and providing necessary solutions to the islands.
The Minister emphasized that safe waste management involves more than just establishing a center or providing a waste collection truck. He explained that it requires developing specialized facilities to specific standards and training personnel across various technical areas.
Furthermore, he stressed the importance of raising awareness within the entire community, including senior citizens, youth, and school students.
While the government is actively working on these aspects, the Minister pointed out that the primary challenge in providing these services effectively is the disparity between the expenditure required and the revenue generated from service fees.
Consequently, the Minister reaffirmed that waste management operations in the islands are currently sustained through substantial subsidies provided by the government.
