Construction has officially begun on a parking building in Hulhumalé designed to accommodate 1,100 vehicles.

The ground-breaking ceremony was held today in Hulhumalé Phase 1, graced by the presence of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

The project was officially inaugurated by the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Mohamed Ameen. Contracted to Batch Construction under a private sector initiative model, the project is scheduled to be completed and handed over within 24 months.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Ameen noted that the facility is designed to provide various vehicular services in addition to parking. He highlighted that the building will include commercial spaces, electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, and areas for various sports and recreational activities.

Minister Ameen further emphasized that this parking building project is part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s strategic plan to address the increasing vehicle density and the acute shortage of parking and registration spaces in the Greater Malé Area.

"In alignment with the government's master plan, specific percentages of space within the seven parking buildings to be established in Hulhumalé will be allocated to public service providers and persons with disabilities. Once these government-mandated parking buildings are completed, Malé’s streets will become safer, and the challenges currently faced in vehicle registration will be significantly resolved," Minister Ameen stated.

Furthermore, the Minister noted that as per the Hulhumalé Master Plan and under private sector initiatives, the government has decided to develop three parking buildings in Hulhumalé Phase 1 and four in Hulhumalé Phase 2, all of which are currently in the commencement stages.
