Minister of Homeland Security Ali Ihsaan has criticized the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), saying it is opposing the proposed referendum for political reasons.

Speaking to ‘MMTV’ following a ruling party event in Addu City, Ihsaan said MDP has always been an election-focused party but is now rejecting holding two elections on the same day despite previously supporting similar ideas when in power. He referred to former presidents Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Mohamed Nasheed as having backed such moves in the past.

The minister dismissed claims that holding two elections simultaneously would violate rights, arguing instead that it would reduce state spending and promote political stability.

He also urged voters to support government candidates in upcoming local council elections to ensure continued development projects.
