The government has finalized plans to launch its official taxi service with a fleet of 150 vehicles on the 2nd of next month.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) and the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation on February 15, 2025, to establish this taxi line service within the Malé region.
Designed to address current challenges in public transportation, the service will operate through a dedicated mobile application, allowing commuters to request taxis easily. The service will be available 24 hours a day.
In a statement released today, MTCC confirmed that the first shipment of electric cars for the service arrived in the Maldives today. This initial batch consists of 60 vehicles of the Changan Automobile brand, specifically the S05 model.
The second shipment, comprising 90 additional vehicles, is scheduled to arrive on the 29th of this month. According to MTCC, this batch will also feature Changan Automobile vehicles, including the Lumin and S07 models.
"With the arrival of all vehicles, the service will commence at full scale with a total of 150 cars. The Malé Taxi Line is set to be introduced and begin operations on April 2, 2026," MTCC stated.
The taxi service will employ both full-time and part-time drivers, who will be required to wear designated vests while on duty.
MTCC further assured that the taxi service will adhere strictly to the fares established by the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation.
