President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that work has commenced on drafting specialized legislation for the implementation of the death penalty, and that executions will proceed once the bill is passed by the People's Majlis.
Speaking at a press conference held at the President's Office today, the President stated that as the Maldives is a 100 percent Muslim nation, the state does not view the non-implementation of capital punishment for those sentenced to death as an optional matter.
However, the President noted that he does not believe the death penalty should be administered solely through regulations or procedural guidelines.
The President confirmed that the Attorney General's Office is currently drafting the necessary bill to facilitate the implementation of the death penalty, and a significant portion of the drafting process has already been completed.
He further stated that the bill is expected to be submitted to the floor of the Parliament during the current session.
"Once the bill is passed by the Majlis and ratified, this government will, God willing, carry out the execution of all individuals who have exhausted all judicial appeal processes and whose death sentences are finalized," the President said.
The President pointed out that there are several individuals in the Maldives currently serving sentences for murder and drug trafficking who have been sentenced to death, but whose executions have yet to be carried out.
