The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure has published the policy for issuing land plots to residents of Malé under the government’s housing programme.

The two schemes announced in the government gazette are the “Binveriya” scheme and the “Goathi-Gedhoru” programme, introduced as part of a presidential decision. The housing projects fall under a pledge outlined this year by President Mohamed Muizzu in his Presidential Address.

Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office, Housing Minister Dr. Abdulla Muththalib said both schemes are designed to provide land plots for Malé residents. The “Goathi-Gedhoru” programme is intended for individuals who were previously unable to apply for housing in the Malé area due to issues related to a spouse’s name. Meanwhile, the “Binveriya” special scheme is open to those who received land under a previous government’s land ownership programme, provided they agree to give up that land.

The policy also allows individuals who were unable to apply for flats under earlier schemes to apply under the new programme. President Dr Muizzu has previously stated that 1,000 housing units will be allocated under each scheme.

This is the first phase of the “Family Housing Project” under the government’s “Housing for All” policy. Applications have already opened for 15,000 flats in the Malé and Rasmale’ region, as well as 7,900 three-room flats in Hulhumalé and Vilimalé.

According to the ministry, applications for the programmes will be accepted from the 24th to the 30th of this month through the Housing Portal.
