President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said that development projects in 57 islands have been halted due to a lack of cooperation from anti-government councils.
Speaking at a Taraweeh gathering organized by the People's National Congress at Artificial Beach, the President stated that despite the government’s efforts, some island councils have failed to hand over land needed to implement planned projects.
He appealed to mayors, council presidents, councillors and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) members to elect PNC candidates to help overcome such obstacles.
Referring to the Malé City Council, President Dr Muizzu said that during his tenure as Mayor, a Strategic Action Plan for the capital was approved. However, he claimed the plan was not properly implemented over the past two years, causing hardship for residents of Malé.
Although PNC holds a majority in the council, he noted that regulations grant executive authority to the mayor and council presidents to implement decisions.
The President added that development of parks initiated during his mayoral term has not been properly maintained. He also highlighted ongoing road construction projects in Malé, including works supported by the Chinese government and the development of Boduthakurufaanu Magu funded by the state.
President Dr Muizzu stressed the importance of electing leaders who would cooperate fully with the government to ensure continued development.
