President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to amend the Public Finance Act to ensure that the state budget is passed in December, aligning it with the start of a new parliamentary term.
Speaking at a Taraweeh event hosted by the People's National Congress at Artificial Beach, the President said that when he assumed office, a parliamentary majority opposed his policies. He noted that although the government had planned several development projects for 2024, significant funding was cut when the 2024 budget was passed in 2023, making implementation difficult.
The President proposed amending the law to allow Parliament to pass the budget by September 30, with final approval on December 1 — the date when a new Parliament is sworn in. He said this would allow an incoming president to begin governing with a budget aligned to his pledges, particularly following the 2028 presidential election and the seating of a new Parliament on December 1, 2028.
He added that the current system gives the opposition a six-month window in Parliament that could create obstacles for the government. According to the President, previous parliamentary actions hindered the implementation of the people’s mandate.
Referring to members of the Maldivian Democratic Party who later joined the ruling party, he said the move reduced attempts to block the government’s agenda through Parliament.
President Dr Muizzu emphasized that the proposed changes are aimed at ensuring stability, safeguarding national sovereignty, and promoting development, rather than serving political interests.
