Local fisherman nabs giant Red Snapper

An unusually large Red Snapper has been caught in the Maldives by a local fisherman.

Local fishermen’s social media states that the fish was caught by Ahmed Manik (Amo) who went fishing on the reef at Gaafu Alifu Gemanafushi. The fish weighs 30 kilograms according to the social media group.

Maldivian fisheries expert, Ahmed Hafiz, who has given Dhivehi names for the fishes, told One Online said that the fish is of the Red Snapper family and he has no knowledge that a similar size of the fish was caught in the Maldives in the past.

He said that the fish is called Deep Snapper or Giant Deep Snapper and usually lives between 92-300 meters deep.

Some social media groups have said that it is a Giant Ruby Snapper.

Hafiz said that there is no local Dhivehi name for such giant fish.
