Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has announced that work is underway to provide water and electricity services to vessels docking in front of the Malé Local Market.
In a post shared last night, MPL stated that cargo and passenger vessels—which had been temporarily relocated to the MMA area and the Hulhumalé Petrol Jetty to facilitate the development of Boduthakurufaanu Magu—have now begun docking at 'Zone A' of the Malé North Harbor (the quay wall facing Boduthakurufaanu Magu).
MPL noted that they are currently working to establish water and electricity connections for vessels docking in this area, a service that was not previously available at this location.
The company highlighted that the most significant improvement accompanying the resumption of services at the North Harbor is the installation of 36 entirely new bollards, replacing those that had deteriorated beyond use. This upgrade ensures a safer and more secure docking experience for the vessels using the harbor.
Furthermore, MPL mentioned that efforts are ongoing to transition vessels to 'Zone B' of the North Harbor (the western quay wall) within the coming week.
The widened segment of Boduthakurufaanu Magu near the market area was reopened just prior to the start of Ramadan. While this area was historically one of the most congested and traffic-prone districts in Malé, the expansion has effectively resolved the long-standing issue of traffic congestion.
The North Harbor area was officially reopened to cargo and passenger vessels, as well as fishing boats, last Thursday.
