The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has warned that air pollution levels are expected to reach hazardous levels for human health over the next five days.
The MET Office stated today that the prevalence of haze in the northern and central atolls has already reached levels that pose a risk to health. Haze is affecting the entire country, and horizontal visibility is expected to drop below three kilometers, according to the MET Office.
The office further projected that these conditions are likely to persist for the coming five days.
Consequently, the MET Office has urged seafarers and individuals spending significant time outdoors to adhere to the guidelines set by the Health Protection Agency (HPA).
The Air Quality Index (AQI) in the Maldives currently exceeds 105, prompting the HPA to advise the public to wear masks.
The HPA noted that individuals with underlying health conditions, as well as the general public, are at an increased risk of developing respiratory issues due to the current air quality.
