President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that a foreign policy centered on the oceans is crucial for the very existence of the Maldives.
During his current official visit to Germany, the President visited the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) yesterday and delivered a keynote speech.
In his address, the President noted that the Maldives is situated in a strategically competitive region where major global trade routes intersect. He emphasized that the Indian Ocean has become one of the most significant regions of the 21st century.
"An ocean-based foreign policy is existential for the Maldives and fundamental for the international community. The Maldives stands ready to work with Germany and other like-minded partners to ensure that the global oceans remain a space for cooperation, resilience, and shared responsibility. The principles governing maritime management will shape both the future of small island states and international stability," the President remarked.
Furthermore, the President highlighted the strengthening resolve in climate action, the enhancement of maritime security, and the increasing role of small states as active participants in shaping international standards through inclusive multilateral cooperation.
Following the speech, while responding to questions from the participants, the President stated that the Maldives' approach to ensuring maritime security and building resilience is built upon strong relations with neighboring countries, respect for regional integrity, and environmental protection.
