President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has been named one of TIME magazine’s 100 most influential people in the health sector, marking the first time a Maldivian president has received the recognition.
TIME included President Dr Muizzu on the list for measures introduced since he took office in 2023 to improve public health in the Maldives.
Key initiatives highlighted include strong anti-tobacco policies, such as a ban on the sale and use of cigarettes for those born after 2007 and a prohibition on vapes. The administration has also established schizophrenia clinics across the country and launched a 24-hour mental health helpline this year.
In addition, the Maldives became the first country to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B.
Last year, President Dr Muizzu received an award from the World Health Organization in recognition of his efforts to curb tobacco use.
