The Criminal Court has sentenced former immigration official Ibrahim Ahmed to 11 months in prison after he pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including misuse of official capacity, theft, and using authority without consent.

The case relates to the abuse of position to obtain undue benefits from expatriate workers. Ibrahim Ahmed admitted to all three charges and entered into a plea agreement with the state.

Under the agreement, he was sentenced to one year and 12 days in prison for misuse of official authority, with two months to be served in prison and the remaining sentence commuted to a fine of MVR 62,400.

For robbery, he was sentenced to two years, four months, and 24 days in prison, of which seven months will be served in jail. The remainder was commuted to a fine of MVR 130,800. He was also ordered to pay MVR 50,000 in compensation to an expatriate victim.

In addition, Ibrahim Ahmed received a sentence of one year and 12 days for unauthorized possession of another person’s property. Two months will be served in prison, while the remainder was reduced to a fine of MVR 62,400. The court also ordered him to pay MVR 3,500 in compensation.
