Chief Justice Abdul Ghani Mohamed has revealed that 13,032 cases have been pending for more than a year due to various reasons.
Speaking at the ceremony to inaugurate the Judicial Year 2026 at CHSC, the Chief Justice said concluding delayed cases as quickly as possible is a key priority to ensure justice is delivered without delay. He said one of the main goals for 2026 is to focus on justice-delayed cases and resolve them efficiently.
Efforts will be made to clear the backlog without affecting the handling of the 21,000 new cases expected to be registered this year. To oversee this work, a special task force will be formed on the 10th of this month.
The task force will examine the reasons for delays in each case by working directly with the assigned magistrates and judges, identify the exact causes, and facilitate proceedings. Where delays involve state agencies, consultations will be held with the relevant institutions.
The Chief Justice said all actions, including communications, will be logged and monitored. He added that the initiative will also address concerns related to detainees held while awaiting trial, noting that public trust in the courts depends on justice being delivered in a timely manner.
