Maldives Police Service has said that the relevant documents that were needed to be completed by the Sri Lankan government in order to bring back escaped fugitive, Abdulla Luthufee, are yet to be completed and handed over.
Police noted that even though they have not received the relevant documents yet, they hope to bring back Luthufee to the Maldives as soon as the paperwork comes through.
Police further added that a special team was currently active in Sri Lanka to bring Luthufee back, and to hand him over to Maldives Correctional Service.
Commissioner of Police, Mohamed Hameedh said last Tuesday that works were underway to bring back Luthufee to the Maldives within 48 hours.
Luthufee was one of the masterminds behind the 1988 Maldives coup d'état. He had traveled to Sri Lanka for medical purposes while serving a life sentence in 2010. An Interpol Red Notice has since been issued to locate the escaped fugitive.
