The National Fertility Centre has celebrated major achievements recorded within its first year of operation, including successful IVF treatments that have already resulted in the birth of two healthy babies.
A ceremony to mark the Centre’s milestones was held this afternoon at Dharumavantha Hospital, attended by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed. The National Fertility Centre was officially opened on 17 November 2024 on the 22nd floor of Dharumavantha Hospital.
Providing details of the Centre’s progress, Senior Consultant and Clinical Director of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department, Dr Mohamed Aseel Jaleel, said extensive preparations had been undertaken prior to its launch. These included specialised training for nurses and anaesthetists in India to ensure readiness for advanced fertility treatments.
Dr Aseel also noted that, with support coordinated through the Office of the First Lady and the Mark Foundation, three doctors have undergone advanced training so far, including one embryologist. He added that significant efforts have also been made to raise public awareness on fertility-related health issues.
“Through IVF treatment, two healthy babies have already been born. The first baby is now 27 days old, while the second is 23 days old,” Dr Aseel said, describing the outcomes as the result of sustained and dedicated work. He added that expanding access to fertility services has brought renewed hope to many families.
According to the National Fertility Centre, 578 couples received consultations during the Centre’s first year. A total of 96 individuals were selected for IVF treatment, with egg retrieval procedures carried out for 86 women. The Centre further reported that embryos were successfully transferred to 68 women, with 23 confirmed pregnancies to date.
