The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has requested a 10-day extension to the application period for the upcoming local council elections, citing delays in clearing candidates’ criminal records.
Speaking at a press conference, MDP campaign manager Abdulla Waheed said that while the Elections Commission (EC) opened applications, other relevant institutions were not adequately prepared. He noted that clearing criminal records, particularly by the Correctional Service and the Judicial Administration, takes three to five days after submission, creating difficulties for candidates within the current timeframe.
The EC has opened applications for local council and women’s development committee elections until 3:30 p.m. on the first day of next month. Waheed said the limited time and the requirement to apply online only are restricting candidates’ electoral rights.
He alleged that the delays are disadvantaging opposition candidates and claimed that government candidates are being facilitated. Waheed said MDP is seeking a fair election with proper preparations and warned that the party would pursue other options if the extension is not granted.
