The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has advised the public not to use antibiotics without consulting a doctor, as viral illnesses continue to spread in the Maldives.

HPA officials said dengue and influenza are currently among the fastest-spreading diseases in the country. Common symptoms include fever, shortness of breath, cough, and sore throat. Influenza mainly affects the respiratory system and can cause more severe symptoms than the common cold, including high fever and prolonged illness.

Health experts noted that elderly people and individuals with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of complications and may develop severe symptoms. They were advised to seek medical care promptly if they experience breathing difficulties or high fever.

The agency stressed that antibiotics are only effective against bacterial infections and should not be used for viral illnesses. Improper use may contribute to antibiotic resistance and may only be necessary if a secondary bacterial infection develops later.

Recommended home care includes adequate rest, drinking plenty of fluids, using medications such as paracetamol to manage fever, and maintaining physical distance from others to reduce the spread of infection. People with chronic lung conditions, including COPD, may experience prolonged coughing and were advised to consult doctors, continue prescribed treatments, and avoid crowded places.
