The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has warned that candidates who seek election through bribery undermine the true power of the people and act only in their own interests.

In a statement issued ahead of the upcoming local council elections, the ACC urged the public to remain alert to attempts by candidates to gain support through bribery. The commission also called on all candidates to refrain from offering bribes and to respect the fundamental principles of democracy during the election period.

The ACC noted that cases of bribery aimed at influencing voters have occurred in the Maldives and said such practices weaken public trust in state institutions. It stressed that integrity is essential when making electoral decisions, adding that corruption has harmful effects on society, including future generations.

The commission highlighted that the success of decentralisation depends on decisions made freely by the people. It said local council elections are meant to ensure that communities choose representatives who are accountable for the development of their islands and constituencies.

The ACC reiterated that bribery in elections strips citizens of their rightful authority and damages the democratic process.
