Authorities have intensified efforts to dismantle drug smuggling and money laundering networks operating in the Maldives, with a special police operation launched in Gaafu Alifu Atoll.
The Maldives Police Service said the operation targets locations linked to suspected drug trafficking and financial crimes. Searches are being conducted and legal measures taken to enforce the law. The operation involves joint teams from the South Police Division, Intelligence, and Drug Enforcement units, and also extends to the Malé region.
The crackdown comes amid broader government efforts to strengthen the legal framework against drug-related crimes. The third amendment to the Narcotics Act was passed by the People’s Majlis on December 3, 2025, and ratified on December 6, 2025.
Under the amended law, the death penalty may be imposed if specific conditions are met, subject to unanimous confirmation by the Supreme Court. These conditions include smuggling more than 350 grams of cannabis, more than 250 grams of diamorphine, or more than 100 grams of other narcotic substances. The penalty applies only if the drugs were smuggled into the Maldives by the offender.
Police said operations will continue as part of ongoing efforts to curb drug trafficking and related crimes across the country.
