Dharumavantha Hospital’s National Fertility Centre has successfully delivered a baby boy through in vitro fertilisation (IVF), marking a major milestone for reproductive health services in the Maldives.
The achievement was highlighted by the Male’ Group of Hospitals (MCGH), which described the birth as a historic step and a source of hope for families seeking maternal and fertility care within the country. The success was credited to the efforts of the National Fertility Centre team, along with support from other hospital departments involved in the process.
The availability of IVF services in the Maldives is expected to ease the financial and emotional burden previously faced by families who had to travel abroad for treatment. The National Fertility Centre was inaugurated on 15 November 2024 by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, following calls for a long-term solution to fertility treatment challenges.
The provision of IVF services free of charge was also acknowledged as a significant development. Health officials noted that access to reproductive health services plays an important role in supporting Maldivian families and contributing to a healthy society.
