Former Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Reeko Moosa Manik, has expressed interest in contesting for the position of MDP Chairperson once again.

In a post shared on X today, Moosa stated that he is considering running for the chairpersonship to expand and strengthen the party's activities, and to revive the former spirit of the MDP in fulfilling its role as a political party.

Reeko Moosa previously served as the Chairperson of the MDP during the party's most active years.

Moosa, who began his political career with the MDP, has completed three terms in the People's Majlis. He also held the position of Deputy Speaker of the Parliament.

Moosa was removed from the MDP chairpersonship in 2014, following a dispute over his vote in the Majlis to dismiss Supreme Court Justice Ahmed Faiz.

His name was removed from the MDP register on November 28, 2016. After leaving the MDP, Moosa joined the then-ruling coalition's primary party, PPM, on July 11, 2017.

Upon joining PPM, Moosa spoke highly of former President Abdulla Yameen and his administration's governance. He also played a prominent role in campaigning for Yameen during the 2018 Presidential Election.

Following President Yameen's defeat in the presidential election, Moosa distanced himself from PPM's activities.

Subsequently, he rejoined the MDP in 2022 and has since been a vocal supporter of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

While Moosa has announced his intention to consider contesting for the MDP chairpersonship, the Member of Parliament for the Galolhu South constituency, Meekail Ahmed Nasheem, has also expressed interest in the position.
