President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that unity is one of the most admirable and lasting qualities of the Maldivian people, especially during times of hardship and national crisis. He made the remarks in his address to mark National Unity Day.

Reflecting on the 2004 tsunami, the President highlighted the strong social values of Maldivians, including the support and hospitality shown to displaced families. He stressed the need for sustainable national development, continuous emergency preparedness and stronger national resilience.

The President also noted that the Maldives’ positive standing in the international community has been a key advantage during times of crisis, emphasising the importance of maintaining strong global partnerships.

Reaffirming that unity is the foundation of national progress, he said collective solidarity is essential for achieving shared goals, advancing development and maintaining a peaceful society.

In a message shared on social media, President Muizzu said Islamic principles guide Maldivians to uphold unity, compassion and mutual care, noting that the nation’s recovery from the tsunami and other challenges has been rooted in these values.

First Lady Sajidha Mohamed also shared a message, offering prayers for continued unity, compassion and strength among Maldivians.

National Unity Day is marked on 26 December each year. This year marks 21 years since the 2004 tsunami, which affected most inhabited islands, claimed 82 lives, left 26 people missing and displaced around 15,000 people.
