Former Immigration Controller Mohamed Shamaan Waheed has been released from custody, the Prosecutor General’s Office (PG) confirmed. His release follows the completion of testimony from key witnesses in the case against him.

Shamaan was released with conditions, including the withholding of his passport. He was originally arrested on March 22, 2025, on charges of misusing his position and obtaining undue benefits from expatriate workers.

The Criminal Court initially remanded him to 15 days in custody, and subsequent detention requests were reviewed by the High Court and Supreme Court, both of which upheld his detention until the end of the trial.

During a November 18, 2025 hearing, Shamaan defense requested his release, but the court ruled that the circumstances for detention had not yet been resolved. With witness testimonies now concluded, he has been allowed to leave custody under set conditions.
