The Air Quality Index (AQI) shows that air quality in the Greater Malé Region has reached a dangerous level due to pollution. The Air Quality Monitoring System operated by the Center for Maritime Studies has placed the area under a red alert.
Current AQI levels stand at 175, indicating unhealthy air that poses serious health risks. PM2.5 concentrations have reached 90 micrograms per cubic meter, which is 18 times higher than the minimum guideline set by the World Health Organization.
Poor air quality at this level is linked to an increased risk of lung and heart diseases. In response, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) has advised the public to take precautions, including wearing masks when going outdoors.
