Speed breakers recently installed on the streets of Hulhumalé have been removed following widespread complaints from the public.
More than 30 speed breakers were placed on major roads last September by the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) as part of an initiative aimed at improving road safety and reducing speeding. HDC stated at the time that the project was launched to make Hulhumalé a safer place for all road users.
However, the installations quickly became a topic of criticism. Many residents said the speed breakers were inconvenient and uncomfortable to drive over, with some noting that passing over them could even be painful, especially at night when visibility is lower.
In response to the growing concerns, HDC removed all the speed breakers last night. The corporation has not disclosed the exact reason behind the decision to remove them.
